Cane River Soap Company

There is something deeply American about creating with your own two hands.

Long before mass production and overnight shipping, families gathered around kitchen tables, workshop benches, and front porches to craft what they needed with care, intention, and pride. That spirit still lives on today in small towns and Main Streets across America. Tucked along the historic streets of Natchitoches, Louisiana, it lives beautifully inside Cane River Soap Company.

We first discovered the boutique almost by accident while delivering Lola Magazine in Natchitoches. The storefront windows on Front Street were still covered in brown craft paper, hinting that something new was quietly taking shape behind the scenes. Curiosity got the best of us, so naturally, we walked right in.

Mike and Kim Walthall

Inside, we met husband-and-wife team Mike and Kim Walthall. Kim was blending botanical ingredients and essential oils while Mike warmly shared the vision behind their handcrafted skincare company. The shop was unfinished at the time, but the heart behind it was unmistakable. You could feel it immediately. They weren’t simply opening another retail store. They were building something intentional. Something personal. Something made with care.

Months later, we returned to Natchitoches while delivering another issue of Lola, and this time the doors were officially open. The paper had come down from the windows, revealing a warm and welcoming boutique filled with soft fragrances of lavender, citrus, herbs, and earth. The atmosphere felt calm in the way handcrafted spaces often do—unhurried, genuine, and inviting. We have visited the shop as each issue of Lola is delivered in Natchitoches. We have also made their products a staple in our homes.

Like many small American businesses, Cane River Soap Company began not with a business plan, but with a simple idea rooted in family and tradition.

In 2010, Mike and Kim decided to have what they called a “Crafted Christmas.” Rather than purchasing gifts, they wanted to create something meaningful with their own hands for the people they loved. Soapmaking became their holiday project, and somewhere between essential oils, molds, and handcrafted batches, they discovered more than a hobby. They discovered purpose.

NAK-A-TISH Soap

What began as a heartfelt family tradition slowly grew into a Louisiana-made company centered around wellness, craftsmanship, and intentional living.

Today, Cane River Soap Company creates traditional cold-processed soaps in small batches using thoughtfully selected oils, butters, botanicals, clays, and essential oils.  Their Wellness Collection features scents created solely from essential oils, while their bath salts and body products feel less like luxury items and more like small daily rituals of self-care. Every product reflects the same philosophy that inspired their very first handmade Christmas gifts: create something good, useful, and beautiful for others.

Their products now include personal hygiene goods, essential oils and laundry soaps. All products crafted are free from parabens, artificial dyes, synthetic fragrances, and many of the harsh additives commonly found in commercial skincare products. Instead, each bar, bath soak, and body product is created with ingredients designed to nourish and care for the skin naturally.

And perhaps that is what makes Cane River Soap Company such a perfect fit for Lola’s Celebrate America issue. Because this story is about more than soap.It is about entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, family, and the enduring beauty of small American businesses that still believe quality matters. It is about choosing thoughtful over rushed, handcrafted over factory-made, and community over convenience.

In a world increasingly dominated by fast production and disposable products, companies like Cane River Soap Company remind us that some of the best things in life still come from patience, creativity, and human hands.

Made in America. Made in Louisiana. Made with heart.
