Lieutenant Colonel Marisa King’s Journey of Service, Leadership and Purpose
By Lola Magazine
There is something quietly remarkable about sitting across from someone whose life has been shaped by service to something far greater than herself. Not simply service in the abstract sense, but service marked by sacrifice, discipline, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. When you meet Lieutenant Colonel Marisa King of Barksdale Air Force Base, you immediately sense both strength and humility — the kind that does not need to announce itself.
Her story is not one built on titles or accolades alone, though they are impressive. It is a story of purpose. Of a little girl with extraordinary dreams who dared to believe that the sky was not the limit at all. And somewhere between childhood wonder and military command, Marisa discovered that sometimes the path we imagine for ourselves becomes even greater than the one we originally planned. For Lt. Col. Marisa King, the desire to serve her country began with an unlikely source of inspiration.

At the time, however, space exploration wasn’t her only ambition. Like many children, King balanced lofty aspirations with youthful imagination. She went on to share that while she dreamed of becoming an astronaut, she was equally convinced she might also be a singer like Janet Jackson. Looking back, she recognizes that both dreams shared a common thread: a passion for pursuing meaningful goals with enthusiasm and determination.
As she grew older, King began to see the United States Air Force as a pathway toward aviation and, potentially, space exploration. Along the way, she found inspiration in astronaut Susan Helms, whose journey from the United States Air Force Academy to military aviation and eventually NASA demonstrated that extraordinary dreams could become reality. For King, Helms represented more than an accomplished astronaut. She represented possibility. Growing up, it was easy to admire astronauts from a distance, but learning that Helms had attended the Air Force Academy and served as a military pilot made the dream feel attainable. Suddenly, the path had become clearer. What once seemed like a childhood fantasy now looked like a series of achievable steps.
“If I could follow a path similar to hers,” King reflected, “then maybe I was heading in the right direction.”
That realization became a source of motivation throughout her education and military career. While her own journey would ultimately take a different shape, Helms remained a powerful reminder that extraordinary accomplishments often begin with ordinary people willing to pursue difficult goals with determination and purpose. That inspiration helped shape the next chapter of her life.
After graduating from the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in Astronautical Engineering, King completed Undergraduate Pilot Training in Texas and began a career that would take her around the world. Her assignments have included combat operations in Afghanistan, service within the B-52 community at Barksdale Air Force Base, operational bomb squadrons, test and evaluation programs, global operations planning, and numerous leadership positions.
Each assignment brought new challenges, expanded responsibilities, and opportunities for growth. Alongside her operational duties, King continued her education, earning two master’s degrees while serving. Today, she serves as Deputy Commander of the 2nd Mission Support Group at Barksdale Air Force Base, where she helps oversee daily operations supporting more than 16,000 personnel across the installation.
Over the course of her career, King has accumulated more than 2,900 flight hours, including over 900 combat hours and 147 combat missions supporting military operations around the globe. Those numbers are impressive, but they tell only part of the story. Behind each hour logged in the air is a commitment to preparation, precision, and teamwork. Military aviation demands constant learning, adaptability, and trust—not only in the aircraft, but in the men and women serving alongside you. Whether flying combat missions, evaluating operational readiness, or leading large organizations, King has approached each assignment with the same determination that first inspired her as a young girl looking toward the stars.
One of the first things King will tell anyone about her current position is that there is no such thing as a typical day. The responsibilities of the 2nd Mission Support Group touch nearly every aspect of life and operations at Barksdale. On any given day, she may be coordinating responses to infrastructure concerns, overseeing safety initiatives, supporting mission readiness, or addressing unexpected challenges that arise across the installation.
Occasionally, those challenges include situations most people would never associate with military operations—including the removal of alligators that wander into restricted areas on base property. The unpredictability is part of what makes King’s role both demanding and rewarding. Her position provides a unique perspective on the installation, but more importantly, it allows her to connect with the people behind the mission. While operational readiness remains a top priority, King treasures the ability to know Airmen and their families personally, understand their concerns, and support the military community that helps Barksdale thrive.
Military service, she believes, is ultimately about people.

Having served alongside military members from other nations and worked in locations across the globe, King has witnessed firsthand the freedoms many Americans often take for granted. Those experiences deepened her gratitude for the nation she serves and strengthened her belief in the importance of protecting those freedoms for future generations.
Despite the divisions often highlighted through social media and national headlines, King remains optimistic about America’s future. “We truly are a melting pot,” she said. “People from different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs have the opportunity to build lives, pursue careers, and create futures for their families.” For King, military service extends far beyond strategic objectives or operational missions. It represents a commitment to communities, families, and fellow citizens. That perspective has only strengthened her dedication to serving the nation and the ideals it represents.
Lt. Col. King has experienced nearly a dozen deployments, each with its own story and defining moments. Among the many experiences throughout her career, one mission in Afghanistan remains particularly memorable.
During a nighttime operation involving a raid mission and the crash-landing of a Chinook helicopter, the situation rapidly shifted into a complex personnel recovery effort. At just twenty-five years old, King found herself coordinating what aviators refer to as “the stack”—the intricate management of aircraft operating at multiple altitudes within a shared airspace. More than a dozen aircraft from multiple military branches and allied nations were operating simultaneously while recovery efforts unfolded below.
Her responsibilities included managing aircraft movement, coordinating sensor coverage, and ensuring the safe operation of all assets involved. What remains most significant to her years later is not the complexity of the mission itself, but the remarkable teamwork displayed by everyone involved. The operation demonstrated what can be accomplished when individuals from different services, specialties, and nations unite behind a common purpose. It is a lesson she still carries today.
Clearly, King is setting standards, goals and perhaps even a childhood dream for a young girl. Although she does not define her career through the lens of gender, she does recognize the importance of visibility and representation for young women considering military service. The opportunities afforded to her through the Air Force—from flying B-52s to leading large organizations and serving around the world—were opportunities she never fully imagined as a young girl.
Today, she hopes her journey encourages other young women to consider careers in service, leadership, aviation, science, and engineering. Military service, she notes, offers pathways to education, professional development, travel, leadership experience, and personal growth that can transform lives.
While King hopes young women see the possibilities available through military service, she also hopes they understand that success rarely follows a perfectly straight path. Careers evolve. Goals shift. New opportunities emerge. Some of the most meaningful experiences of her life were not part of her original plan. Instead, they came through a willingness to say yes to new challenges, trust the process, and remain open to growth. That perspective has shaped her leadership style today. She encourages young people to pursue excellence wherever they are planted, knowing that each step often prepares them for opportunities they cannot yet see. In many ways, her own career stands as proof that dreams may change over time, but purpose has a way of guiding the journey.

For now, however, her focus remains firmly on the mission before her at Barksdale Air Force Base. While her path has evolved far beyond the dreams of a second-grade girl captivated by space travel, the motivation behind it remains unchanged: a desire to embrace meaningful challenges and contribute to something greater than herself.
Away from the flight line and daily responsibilities of military leadership, King enjoys many of the same things as other women balancing demanding careers and family life. She loves working out, discovering new music, attending concerts, and finding great food wherever her travels take her. Her musical tastes are as varied as her career experiences. One weekend might find her at an electronic dance music concert, while another could have her singing along to a favorite 90s country artist in downtown Shreveport.
The variety reflects a personality that remains curious, energetic, and open to new experiences. Yet whether she is leading Airmen, supporting military families, pursuing personal goals, or simply enjoying an evening with friends, the same characteristic continues to define her journey: a willingness to embrace challenges and keep moving forward.
After all, the little girl who once dreamed of becoming an astronaut still believes there are new horizons waiting to be explored. Sometimes, the most extraordinary journeys begin with a child who simply dares to look beyond the stars.
